A stunning example of the umbrellas used during the frevo of Recife’s Carnaval

A yellow umbrella used for traditional New Orleans jazz band. Reminds me of the frevo umbrellas in Recife Carnaval. There’s definitely a connection – New Orleans 2nd line and Carnaval rhythms… I’m getting Carnaval on my mind.

The maracatu musicians start early and this young man is really slamming during the Carnaval competition. He’s in bare feet on the Recife streets – better to feel the rhythms of the deep alfaias.

This is from Carnival 2007 – the brass bands play through the streets of Olinda day and night.
Singing the traditional toadas in the colors of Pernambuco’s flag, these women were loving being the center of attention in the center of Rua Bom Jesus in old Recife during the last day of Carnaval, 2006.
